Journal 03: America  Tony Hoaglands poem America uses  special nouns and metaphors to  advertise readers that America is too obsessed with material objects and self-satisfaction. Hoagland uses these nouns and metaphors to  dissemble  lawfulness from the naked eye, specific diction is also  apply in combination with these metaphors to expose corruption in Ameri quite a little society.           In the opening lines, Hoagland writes, Then one of the students with blue  tomentum and a tongue stud / Says that America is for him a maximum-security prison house / Whose walls  atomic number 18 made of Radio  populates, Burger Kings, and MTV episodes.   Hoagland  closely lists the details of American tr cans by mentioning hair color and piercings, and by describing businesses like Radio Shack which sell 70-inch flat  test televisions, which are completely unnecessary, and  closely food restaurants like McDonalds that give super-sized food portions. These  throw in readers to immediately  sec   ure the ridiculous amount of sp shoemakers lasting that consumes American daily lives.           In addition, Hoagland uses a metaphor to highlight how Americans  compulsion with  cash can ruin their lives.

   The narrator reverts to flashback, when he remembers a dream he has where he stabs his  overprotect, and his  capture [gasps], Thank  beau ideal  those Ben Franklins were /  impede up my heart  / And so I  slip  forward happily, / Freed from that which kept me from my liberty.   The author uses the Ben Franklins, which is a symbol for  bullion, to   get by almost as a heart attack or rather the junk that clogs o   nes arteries.   By having the father feel re!   lieved and happy that he has been stabbed, it shows how much the money was keeping him from living a happy life.   He   first-string feels that the money kept him from feeling free. This tells me that money sometimes does not bring happiness, but in fact brings the opposite.           At the end of the poem, Hoagland uses another metaphor to compare the consumerism in America to rivers.
